How FR Apparel Is Made and Tested: Inside the BlackGold Supply Co. Process 🇺🇸💧

When you're working in oil and gas, your gear isn't just clothing it's the last line of defense between you and a flash fire. At BlackGold Supply Co., we don't take that lightly. Here's an honest look at how flame-resistant apparel is made, how it's tested, and what separates real FR gear from clothing that just claims to be safe.

What Makes Clothing Flame-Resistant?

True FR clothing is built from fibers that are inherently resistant to ignition meaning the protection is woven into the fabric itself, not added as a surface treatment that can wash out over time. The most common FR fiber technologies include:

  • Modacrylic blends — Lightweight and comfortable, excellent for everyday layering.
  • Aramid fibers (e.g., Nomex®) — High-heat protection, widely used in arc flash and petrochemical environments.
  • FR-treated cotton — Durable and breathable, but requires careful laundering to maintain protection levels.
  • Inherent FR cotton/nylon blends — The sweet spot for oilfield work: comfort, durability, and permanent protection.

At BlackGold, we build our garments around fabrics that maintain their FR properties wash after wash, because a rating you have to maintain is a rating you can lose.

The Standards That Matter on the Jobsite

FR apparel in oil and gas is governed by specific ASTM and NFPA standards. The two you'll hear most often:

  • NFPA 2112 — The baseline standard for FR garments worn in flash fire environments. A garment must pass flame spread, heat transfer, and thermal shrinkage tests to earn this certification.
  • NFPA 70E — Governs arc flash protection, rated in cal/cm². The higher the arc rating, the more energy the garment can absorb before breaking open.

Every BlackGold garment is designed to meet or exceed the standards required for your work environment. Learn more about what our gear is built to do on our Flame Resistant Clothing Features page.

How FR Apparel Is Tested

Testing isn't a formality it's the proof. Here's what a legitimate FR garment goes through before it earns a certification:

  1. Vertical flame test (ASTM D6413) — A fabric swatch is exposed to a direct flame for 12 seconds. Char length and after-flame time are measured. A passing garment self-extinguishes quickly.
  2. Thermal protective performance (TPP) test — Measures how much heat transfers through the fabric to a simulated skin sensor. Higher TPP = better insulation.
  3. Predicted body burn test (ASTM F1930) — A full garment is placed on an instrumented mannequin and exposed to a simulated flash fire. The percentage of predicted body burn determines the overall protective rating.
  4. Laundering durability — The fabric is washed repeatedly (typically 25–100 cycles) and re-tested to confirm FR properties are maintained throughout the garment's life.

Built in the Field, Tested in the Lab

What makes BlackGold different isn't just the specs it's how we design. Our gear is developed with direct input from the workers who wear it: roughnecks, operators, and field hands who know what "all day" really means. The result is FR apparel that passes in the lab and proves itself on location.

"I've tried a lot of FR brands over the years. BlackGold is the first one where I forget I'm wearing FR  it just feels like regular clothes. But I know it's not."
